Tenant Fees Banned

The Tenant Fees Act came into force on the 1st June, and agents should already have implemented the correct changes within their business in order to be compliant with the law. While most other types of fee will be prohibited, fees can still be charged to replace lost keys, late rent payment, breaches or changes made to tenancy agreement, ie terminating early or change of sharer. The consequences for charging prohibited fees to tenants are far reaching. Tenants will be able to reclaim any money they have paid via the court system – with interest. Trading standards will also be able to fine landlords and agents up to £30,000. |
